Chapter 2: A Decision of Duty

The palace of Suryagarh had already awakened with the first rays of the sun. Servants hurried through the corridors, soldiers took their positions, and the sound of temple bells echoed through the palace.

King Vikramaditya adjusted his royal angavastram as he prepared to leave for the Raj Sabha.

Just as he stepped into the courtyard, a heart-wrenching cry made him stop.

"Ma...!"

A little boy, barely four years old, had fallen while playing. His tiny knee was bleeding, and tears streamed down his cheeks.

"Ma... bahut dard ho raha hai..."

Within moments, a palace maid rushed towards him.

"Arre, mere laal!" she exclaimed, gathering him into her arms.

"Bas... bas... Ma aa gayi na."

The little boy buried his face in her shoulder. As she gently wiped away his tears and kissed his forehead, his cries slowly faded.

Watching the scene, Vikramaditya's gaze instinctively shifted towards little Veerendra, who was playing and crawling nearby with a wooden horse.

A few moments later, the prince stumbled and fell.

The nurse immediately picked him up.

"It's alright, Rajkumar."

Veerendra looked around with his innocent eyes, as if searching for someone.

Someone who would never come.

His...

Ma.

Vikramaditya felt his chest tighten.

Meera...

If only you were here.

He had spent the last year mourning as a husband.

But today...

For the first time, he felt the helplessness of a father.

No amount of love from him could ever replace the warmth of a mother's embrace.

That evening, Vikramaditya walked into the Rajmata's chamber.

She looked up from her prayers.

"Vikram?"

He stood silently for a moment before speaking.

"I have made my decision."

The Rajmata slowly rose to her feet.

"You will... marry again?"

He nodded.

"I still love Meera."

"And I always will."

"No one can ever take her place in my heart."

His voice faltered for a brief moment.

"But Veerendra deserves a mother... and Suryagarh deserves its Maharani."

A smile of relief spread across the Rajmata's face.

She placed her hand on his head lovingly.

"May Mahadev bless this decision."

"I knew one day you would choose your duty over your grief."

The very next day, renowned matchmakers from neighboring kingdoms arrived at the palace.

One by one, exquisite portraits of princesses were placed before the Rajmata.

"This is Princess Mrinalini of Ratnapur."

"This is Princess Devyani of Chandrapur."

"The Princess of Devagiri..."

The Rajmata carefully observed each painting while Vikramaditya remained silent.

None of them stirred his interest.

Suddenly, another portrait slipped from the stack and landed on the marble floor.

The matchmaker quickly bent down.

"Kshama kijiye, Rajmata."

"This portrait was mixed with the others by mistake."

The Rajmata glanced at it.

A young woman with fearless eyes looked back at her. There was grace in her posture, yet a spark of defiance in her gaze.

"Who is this princess?" she asked.

"Princess Tarini of Vijaygarh."

"Then why was her portrait removed?"

The matchmaker lowered his head respectfully.

"Her marriage has already been fixed."

"With whom?"

"With a king nearly fifty years of age."

"The alliance has been accepted by her father."

Silence settled over the chamber.

Vikramaditya's eyes remained fixed on Tarini's portrait.

A princess...

Being sacrificed for politics.

He looked at the painting once more.

He could not offer her love.

That place in his heart belonged to Meera.

But he could offer her respect.

A life of dignity.

And freedom from a marriage she had never chosen.

He finally spoke.

"Send our royal messenger to Vijaygarh."

The Rajmata turned towards him.

"You wish to ask for Princess Tarini's hand?"

Vikramaditya nodded.

"If destiny has left both of us with no choice..."

"...then let us at least make a choice that protects someone else's life."

His gaze never left the portrait.

"I shall marry Princess Tarini."

Far away, in the palace of Vijaygarh, Tarini had no idea that destiny had just rewritten her future.
